A water heater leaking is one of those problems where the location is the diagnosis. A drip from a fitting at the top is a very different story from water welling up under the tank, and knowing which you have tells you whether to grab a wrench or start shopping. Most leaks fall into a handful of clear categories — the connections, the relief valve, the drain valve, or the tank itself — and only one of them means replacement. Leaks at the top: connections
Water pooling around the top of the heater usually comes from the cold and hot water connections where the pipes meet the tank. Over years of heating and cooling, these unions can work slightly loose and weep. This is often the easiest kind of leak to fix: with the water and power off, simply tightening the fittings snugly — or replacing a worn flexible connector — frequently stops it. Because it is a fitting rather than the tank, a top-connection leak is rarely a reason to replace the whole heater, and it is worth checking these first before assuming the worst.
Leaks at the valves
Two valves are common leak points. The temperature-and-pressure (T and P) relief valve on the side is a safety device that releases water if pressure or temperature climbs too high — so a leak here can mean the valve is doing its job (too much pressure or a thermostat set too hot) or simply that the valve is worn and needs replacing. The drain valve at the bottom, used to flush the tank, can drip if it is not fully closed or has a bad washer, and it is an inexpensive part to replace. Leaks from the bottom: the tank
This is the one that matters most. If, after ruling out the connections and valves, water is genuinely coming from the bottom of the tank itself, the steel tank has almost certainly corroded through from the inside — and that cannot be repaired. Sediment and rust build up over the years and eventually eat through the tank wall, and once it leaks, replacement is the only real fix. If your heater is also in the 8-to-12-year range, a bottom-of-tank leak is a clear signal it has reached the end of its life. Fix or replace, and preventing the next one
To sum up: connection and valve leaks are usually repairable, while a leaking tank means replacement. If you are unsure where the water is coming from, dry everything thoroughly, lay down paper towels, and watch for a few minutes to see exactly where it reappears — and call a licensed plumber if you are not confident or the leak is severe.
