GPM stands for gallons per minute, and it is the standard way plumbers measure the flow rate of water — how much water actually moves through a fixture, pipe, pump, or supply line in one minute. Pressure gets all the attention, but flow is what you feel: a shower with strong pressure and low flow still feels weak. What GPM actually measures
Flow rate and pressure are two different things, and mixing them up is the most common plumbing misunderstanding. Pressure (measured in psi) is the force pushing the water; GPM is the volume that arrives per minute. You can have high pressure but low flow if the pipe is too small or partly clogged, which is exactly why a good-pressure house can still deliver a disappointing shower. GPM is the honest measure of how much water you are really getting. The gallon itself is a defined unit of volume, which is why GPM translates cleanly into pipe sizing and pump specs.
How to measure GPM (the bucket test)
You do not need special tools to measure flow — just a container of known size and a timer. Turn the water full-on into a five-gallon bucket and time how many seconds it takes to fill. Then divide the gallons by the fill time in minutes. A five-gallon bucket that fills in twenty seconds is fifteen GPM, because twenty seconds is a third of a minute and five divided by a third is fifteen. For a single fixture like a faucet, use a smaller jug so you get a readable time. It is rough but genuinely useful, and you can refine or convert the result with the water flow rate calculator.

Most individual fixtures use less water than people expect, thanks to modern efficiency standards:
